“How to Find the Right Personal Trainer”

So you've decided to hire a personal trainer. Now what? How do you find a good one? What is a "good" one? Respected, Experienced, Educated,

Certified , Insured, Personable and Focused.

Respected and Experienced: Personal training is an investment in your health and wellbeing. You can’t put a price on that; however you can protect your self from getting ripped off by unscrupulous business practices. [A] Ask for and check references. [B] If you decide to buy a training package get a signed contract with a refund policy.

Education and Certifications: Look for degrees in exercise physiology or kinesiology. And look for certifications from well known programs like Cooper, ACE, NESTA, NASM,  AFAA, AFPT, or NCSA. Are their certifications current? Do they have more then one Certification? All certification programs require continuing education. A current certification means your trainer is fresh and keeping up-to-date on the latest trends and studies in the fitness industry. They are prepared to offer you the very best of advice and guidance.

Insurance: A good trainer does everything possible to ensure your safety throughout a workout but carries liability insurance to cover you just in case something unexpected were to happen.

Personality and Focus: First... do you like them? After all you are going to be paying to spend time with them.  Trainers come in all shapes and sizes and have many different styles. Male, Female, Body Building, Drill Sergeant, Boot Camp, Strength Training, Prenatal, Yoga, Fusion Dance, Pilates. They work with you as an individual, with a partner, in small groups and large classes. They’ll come to your home, meet you at work or in the park. They work in small studios and mega warehouse gyms. The important thing is to find one that you like and who’s focus is helping you meet your fitness goals.

Hopefully this will help you get off on the right foot as you take your first step toward a fitter healthier you! If you are feeling overwhelmed, consider hiring a lifestyle fitness coach. Based on a comprehensive personality inventory, lifestyle evaluation, and fitness goals assessment they will help you discover the best fitness program for you. A program that fits you, your personality, preferences and fitness goals!
